This is a newly created role for a dynamic leader with a vision for the future of Geriatrics and the Department of Family Medicine . The new director will lead a well financed/funded collaborative on geriatrics and gerontology with a vision to become a national model for innovative, collaborative, multidisciplinary and community-based research, training and education. Development of statewide research networks and training opportunities will build on the clinical and community data associated with the statewide community-based structure of the College and the MSU units. The selected individual is expected to provide effective leadership and administration of all aspects of a multidisciplinary department that consist of both M.D. and Ph.D. faculty, engaged in clinical practice, teaching, research, and community service. A tenured system professorship will be available for the appropriate candidate (pending Board of Trustee approval). General distribution of time for this position is 50% research, 20% outreach/service, 15% administrative and 15% teaching

The new director will have a leadership role in the Geriatric Education Center of Michigan, responsible for recruitment of faculty (MD/DO, PhD) in gerontology and geriatrics, and establishment of the infrastructure necessary to facilitate mentorship, scholarship and rapid response to funding opportunities, and development/oversight of a statewide geriatrics fellowship.

The candidate must be a physician and be eligible for licensure to practice medicine in the State of Michigan and certified by the American Board of Family Medicine or Internal Medicine with a certificate of advanced qualification in geriatrics. The successful candidate should have academic qualifications commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor/Professor and have substantial administrative experience and skills, including and understanding of departmental financing in universities.  The successful candidate should have a strong track record of academic achievement, research and publications, including demonstrated ability to attract external funding; a commitment to education and teaching including mentoring and teaching skills. The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work constructively with a culturally diverse faculty and student body, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity in hiring and promotion.
