The
new chief will have an opportunity to build on the
existing programs and create the vision for the
Division of Cardiology.
The
Division of Cardiology is located in the Wayne
State University/Detroit Medical Center at Harper
University Hospital, which is a leader in
cardiology research, training and patient care.
The new Chief will provide leadership and
mentorship in research to a diverse and
multidisciplinary department that includes both
M.D. and Ph.D. faculty, and strengthen
undergraduate and graduate medical education
across the communities served by the department.
The
Wayne State University School of Medicine is the
nation’s largest single-campus medical school in
the country, with over 700 faculty, 1,000 medical
students and more than 400 graduate students. The
successful candidate will lead the Division of
Cardiology in its clinical, academic, and research
endeavors.
The
school’s ties to the community are strong. As
the only medical school in Detroit, WSU has a
stated mission to improve the overall health of
the community. As part of this mission, the School
has established, with the help of a $6 million NIH
grant, the Center for Urban & African-American
Health to seek new ways to redress health
disparities by identifying preventive strategies
and therapeutic approaches to chronic diseases
that plague this population, namely obesity,
cardiovascular disease and cancer.
The
candidate must be eligible for licensure to
practice medicine in the State of Michigan and
certified by the American Board of Cardiology. The
successful candidate should have a strong track
record of academic achievement, research and
publications, including demonstrated ability to
attract external funding; and a commitment to
education and teaching including mentoring and
teaching skills. A tenured system professorship
will be available for the appropriate candidate.
